Kiryandongo is a new coffee area but has high potential for robusa coffee. The district has prioritized coffee as its 3rd most important enterprise after maize and cassava (District enterprise selection FY2017/2018).
The vast lands in the districts and the favorable climate present a huge potential for coffee to prosper and overtake the current main crops given that coffee is a high value crop and can turn around livelihoods due to its household income generating capacity.
Handz (U) limited with support from Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) established a coffee nursery bed in Kigumba Town Council and more than 100,000 seedlings have been prepared and supplied to smallholder farmers for the planting season of March – April 2018. The uptake of coffee by the farmers is a good signal that soon coffee will be a major source of income in the district. The company, with the support from relevant bodies will use the nursery bed to continue the propagation and supply of high yielding and disease resistant varieties of coffee.
The supply of the seedlings is usually preceded by farmer training in conjunction with the district production office and sub-counties agricultural extension teams.
